Cough Treatment During Pregnancy

For most people when a cough develops, they usually reach for an over the counter medication in order to cure or suppress it. What though do you reach for if you happen to be pregnant? You do not want to take anything that will harm yourself or that child. Certain ingredients in over the counter medications for coughs can hurt the baby.

Coughs, colds and viral fevers may make you feel tired and miserable but do not have any effect on the baby. Even when you have a severe cough, the coughing will not in any way disturb or harm the baby. If the cough persists for more than a few days or is accompanied by a large amount of phlegm, you might want to see your doctor to rule out a severe infection.

Garlic Cough Syrup

Garlic is one of nature’s miracle cure-alls. It has been used to treat all different types of medical conditions. Garlic can help digestive problems, treat fly symptoms and, in this case, get rid of a cough during pregnancy. To prepare the garlic cough syrup properly, first chop up a few cloves of garlic and place them into a mason jar. Next, completely cover the garlic with honey. The honey will act as the syrup. Securely tighten the jar’s lid and place the mixture into the refrigerator and let it marinate for about 24 hours. Ideally, you would want to let it sit for roughly two weeks before you use it, but if you have a cough right now, you cannot wait that long. When you wake up, take a tablespoon of the mixture to subdue the cough and use throughout the day as needed.

Steam can be especially helpful when treating a cough as it restores the moisture to your air passages. The best way to do this is to take a nice, hot bath or shower and breathe in the steam that the hot water gives off. The steam will effectively treat your cough, and will be no harm to the baby.

Ginger, like garlic, is another miracle of nature. It can be useful to treat many different medical problems and can be as effective as pharmacological products. Ginger comes in many different forms, such as whole ginger root, sliced ginger and powdered ginger. For this type of application, sliced ginger is the best to use. If you have whole ginger root, just slice the ginger into very thin pieces. Take a piece of the sliced ginger and place it into your mouth. Chew the ginger until your cough goes away.
